Savannah, GA -
Budget cuts carried over from the
river…to the parade route. Many concerned that members of the third infantry
division and the USS Alaska would not be able to come out if full force to
participate.
"This year there will be a
different reception all over the entire parade because there is less military."
Said Allan Harvey of the Vietnam Veteran's of America
Across the board spending cuts didn't
take away members of the third id band- but it did leave them without two
tactical vehicles that usually accompany them on the parade route. But troops
didn't let that stop them. Not only did the 3rd id get a standing ovation from the crowd, they also kicked off the parade with the national anthem.
Budget cuts weren't as kind to members
of the navy's uss alaska. The crew has traveled up from their naval submarine
base in kings bay for the past 3 years. This year they couldn't afford the
travel expenses. So it came out of their own pockets.
Bob Worth the Commanding Officer of
the USS Alaska say's the safrifice is well worth it.
"We took our own vehicles. We got
invited by the Savannah Navy League which is a great partnership of ours. And
again just a great opportunity to be a part of something special."
