Safety tips for poison prevention week

Posted: Updated:
LOWNDES COUNTY, GA (WALB) -

It's National Poison Prevention Week and Safe Kids Lowndes County is educating parents and children to stay safe.

They remind parents to keep hazardous products out of children's reach.

Each year, roughly 100 children die from unintentional poisoning. Medication is what children most often get their hands on.

Safe Kids organizer Jim Griffin says parents need to keep prescriptions locked away.

Other items such as plants, makeup, and household cleaners can also be dangerous.

"If you were to get down on all fours and crawl around, you'll see what the children see at their eye level. And anywhere you know like under the kitchen sink, in the bathroom, where you have cleaning products, outside, you have to be mindful of those areas," said Sgt. Jim Griffin, Safe Kids Lowndes County.

Safe Kids Lowndes County will be educating children and parents in classrooms throughout the week.

They also warn parents if your children have a reaction to something, call 911 first and poison control after.
