A suspect tried escaping from police custody at St. Joseph's Hospital Tuesday night. Officials at the hospital say the suspect was brought in by Port Wentworth police after complaining about some sort of health issue. The suspect then somehow managed to get away from officers and walked out of the emergency room. A Port Wentworth detective stopped him in the parking lot.
"The number one thing the detective wanted was to have the patient come out of the hospital and eliminate the threat from inside the emergency department," said Scott Larson, St. Joseph's Hospital spokesperson.
The suspect originally turned himself in on outstanding warrants earlier Tuesday.
