EFFINGHAM CO., GA (WTOC) -
An Effingham County man charged with murder
in the beating death of his houseguest took a plea deal and has been sentenced.
Darryl Lovett, 51, of Clyo, is
accused of using a shovel in the slaying of 63-year-old Arthur Scruggs in July.
Effingham County sheriff's
deputies said it started as a family argument on Sam Smart Road in Clyo.
Autopsy results show Scuggs died from multiple blunt force injuries to the
head.
Lovett's trial was scheduled to start Friday. He instead took a plea deal to
have charged reduced to voluntary manslaughter.
He
was sentenced to 20 years in prison. All the other charges dropped.
