Hurricane Charley is being called one of the worst storms in history; however, for people in the Coastal Empire and Low Country, the storm was a near miss. Charley struck Punta Gorda, Florida (north of Fort Myers) Friday afternoon. The storm moved northeast through Orlando before heading out into the Atlantic Ocean. This morning, Charley made landfall again in Georgetown County, South Carolina, north of Beaufort. The storm was downgraded to a tropical storm this afternoon.
