Johnathan Avila's table at the District STAR student luncheon had one less person than the students from the 15 other school districts who sat with their parents and their favorite teacher.
Avilia's father doubles as his math teacher at Jenkins High School. In addition to his honor as Chatham County's STAR student, he now carries the District 8 title and a ticket to the banquest that will announce the state winner in April.
The STAR program is sponsored by the Professional Association of Georgia Educators and the Georgia Chamber of Commerce.
"This is an important honor because these young people are our future," explained PAGE's Leslie Mills. "They are the generation that will find the cure for cancer. They are the ones who will make the world better for all of us.
The district banquet is hosted by PAGE and the Statesboro Exchange Club.
