SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

Fire crews were called out to a structure fire on Isle of Hope early Thursday.

The called went out at 4:30 a.m. Thursday to a home at 29 Island Drive on Isle of Hope in Savannah.

About 6 units with Isle of Hope Fire responded to the scene along with EMS units.

The Assistant Fire Chief for Isle of Hope Fire said the fire was confined to the attic. Flames did cut through the roof in 3 different places. The home mainly suffered heavy smoke damage on the inside.

WTOC's Cristina Tuso spoke with the owner of the home who said the fire alarms did not go off and that it was actually the family's pit bull that woke them to alert them of all the smoke that was filling the home. That is how the family says they were able to escape unharmed.

There is no exact cause of what sparked the fire at this time, but some believe it may have been the water heater, although that has not been confirmed by fire officials.
