House subcommittee unanimously approves 'Boland Bill'

COLUMBIA, SC (WCSC) -

A senate bill that would require people with a mental illness to be reported into a gun background check system has been approved by a house subcommittee, according to South Carolina House Representative Leon Stavrinakis.

Stavrinakis tweeted Thursday morning the House subcommittee gave unanimous approval to Senate bill 413, also known as the "Boland Bill."

Stavrinakis said the bill closes "a glaring loophole."

Last month, Alice Boland allegedly tried to shoot school administrators at Ashley Hall School, but the gun did not fire. Court documents show Boland had a history of mental illness.

It's already illegal to sell guns to someone who is mentally ill. But the lack of reporting means gun shops don't get that information when they run a check.

Under the proposal, information contained in mental health commitment and treatment records could be reported to the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS).

The bill will next make its way to a full House Judiciary Committee for approval.
