Tico Brown finally reaches NCAA Tournament

Rion Brown had a lot to do with the University of Miami reaching the NCAA Tournament for the first time in five years, an achievement that means everything to Brown's father.

Tico Brown has his own basketball resume. He was a star at Georgia Tech and all-time leading scorer in Continental Basketball Association history, largely as a member of the Savannah Spirits.

But what he didn't have was an NCAA Tournament experience, until now, when this year's tournament will be the experience of two lifetimes in Liberty County.

"I never even went to the NIT,'' said Brown, whose son average six points per game this season as a junior at Miami. "As a parent, it's just wonderful when your son can get farther than you were able to get and that's a pretty special feeling for me.''

Rion's already gone as far as it was suspected he might when he was an elite player in the Coastal Empire, a star player for Liberty County High School.

Some were surprised by his choice to play at Miami. But not Tico, who remains an influential part of his son's basketball career.

"In fact, when he scored 22 against Tech,'' says Tico, "he came up to me and said sorry dad. I said, son, that's okay as long as it was you, I can live with it.''

They'll both live with the memories being made in this year's NCAA Tournament far longer than the handful of games and weekends it will take to make them.
