Police confirm woman fatally shot on Savannah's west side

Homicide detectives with Savannah-Chatham Metro Police are investigating the shooting death of a 35-year-old Savannah woman at her residence Sunday night.

Amistica Ganene Grell was declared dead on the front porch of her house in the 600 block of W 40th Street in the Cuyler-Brownsville area around 10:30 p.m.

Central Precinct patrol officers were responding to a report of gunshots when they discovered the woman's body.

Police say Grell's 5-year-old child was unharmed and that weapons, drugs and drug paraphernalia were found inside the home.

Savannah-Chatham Metro police had a section of W 40th Street taped off between Burroughs and Florance streets for hours overnight but reopened the road around 5:15 a.m. Monday.

Family members say Grell had a small criminal record but was about to leave town and move in with her father in Atlanta. Police are trying to determine why she was targeted and if this shooting could be related to the others recently committed.

"They all have similarities but we have nothing that ties them together," said Julian Miller, SCMPD.

The shooting remains under investigation.
