Water Buffalo rescued near Highway 316 and returned home

Posted: Updated:

A run away water buffalo returned home safe and sound Monday after days on the run.

"That's at least a four-foot jump for a water buffalo, that's four foot. That's a pretty good jump," farmer Charlotte Cates said.

Charlotte Cates runs the Wilderness Farm in Barrow County, but it didn't take long for her to realize that her new water buffalo is the one in charge.

Cates said the water buffalo got out of the barn Friday night when a storm blew in and spooked her.

"It blew in pretty hard and a few trees dropped so maybe that's what scared her," Cates said.

And for the next couple of days there were multiple sightings along Highway 316.

Then, Sunday night, a driver called police after seeing the water buffalo about five miles away from the farm. This time, she was rescued.

"We had to stay up with her a couple hours with her after we got her home trying to bring her to. They had to sedate her and then we had to stimulate her and keep her on her feet for a couple hours so we had a long night," farmer Michelle Atkins said.

The wilderness farm decided to name her Precious 8 after the number eight tag on her left ear.

"My heart sunk whenever she ran and I couldn't sleep for three nights and last night I passed out because I'm excited to have her home and I know she is too because she's eating great," Cates said.
