Facebook child predator arrested in Savannah

Posted: Updated:

A Thunderbolt man is behind bars after trying to use the internet to meet a teen girl for sex.

Savannah Chatham police say the man posed as a teenager on Facebook and tried to get a 12- year-old girl to meet him in person.

23-year-old Jesse Brian Sikes of a Robertson Avenue address was arrested in a parking lot on Victory drive where he attempted to meet with the girl he met over the internet for sex. Special Victim Unit investigators arrested Sikes at the scene and charged him with obscene internet contact with a child. Police had been working with a family member of the child after Sikes contacted the girl on facebook, posing as a 16 year old boy and sending obscene messages, while attempting to set up the meeting.

It's a trend officers say is on the rise in our community.

"What we are hoping is these parents really monitor their children's facebook pages and monitor what they are doing online," said Effinham County Sheriff's Office Public Information Officer David Ehsanipoor. "Facebook is one of the biggest tools these predators are using and one in every five minors is actually approached on facebook, that is unwanted solicitation and a lot of children are giving out information."

In the past 14 weeks the Effingham County Sheriff's Office Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force has made 9 arrests of child predators.

In Savannah, SVU is continuing to investigate this case.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crimestoppers.
