CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) -

Charleston police say they have arrested two women after a one-year-old child they were supposed to be babysitting was beaten with a broom.

Deesonia Smith, 30, has been charged with inflicting great bodily injury upon a child and Madeline Mikell, 43, has been charged with unlawful conduct towards a child.

According to an incident report, police were called to 40-Reid Street Apt. A on Monday, March 25 around 5:24 p.m. in response to a call about child abuse.

The report states the victim's mother was advised by Mikell to take her child to the hospital after picking him up on March 20, but would not tell her why. The child had some knots on his face, but the mother thought they were bed bugs.

The victim's mother told police she examined her child when they got home, and found a bruise on his left arm along with bruises on his hand.

The report states the mother then spoke to Mikell, who said Smith had beaten her child with a stick. The mother's 3-year-old child said Smith hit his brother with a broom.

Police say Mikell claimed she was asleep for most of the day due to her medication and did not know what exactly happened to the child at the time of the beating.

The victim's mother told police that before they arrived, she beat Smith with the broom that was used on her child because she wanted her to feel the same pain her child felt.

Police were able to locate a 4' to 5' red broom inside the home. The broom was bent in the middle due to an unknown force.

Both Mikell and Smith were arrested and taken to the Charleston Police Department for further questioning.  They were then transferred to the Charleston County Detention Center.

Police say the victim was then taken to MUSC by his mother.
