Sources to AP: Gingrey to announce US Senate bid

AUGUSTA, Ga. (AP) - Two officials close to the campaign say U.S. Rep. Phil Gingrey is expected to announce his bid for the U.S. Senate on Wednesday.

The officials requested anonymity Tuesday because a formal announcement has yet to be made.

Gingrey would be the second Republican congressman from Georgia to enter what's expected to be a fierce campaign for the U.S. Senate in 2014. U.S. Sen. Saxby Chambliss, a Republican, earlier announced he would not be seeking a third term, citing frustration with partisan gridlock in Washington.

Gingrey is expected to announce his decision at a Wednesday morning event in Augusta. A Gingrey spokeswoman would only say the congressman would announce his decision on the Senate race.

Gingrey, an OB-GYN doctor from Marietta, was first elected to Congress in 2002.
