STATESBORO, GA (WTOC) -

Plenty of people laced up their running shoes to help their neighbors battling a deadly disease.

More than 500 runners took part in the Second Annual Pink Power Run 5k on the Georgia Southern University campus. Proceeds go to the Statesboro Bulloch County Breast Cancer Foundation, which helps breast cancer patients and educates the public on the disease.

"This foundation is all about helping those who need it. It's been incredible getting involved and raising money because you never know what you might need." said Morrie Shelkoff, breast cancer survivor.

"It means so much to know that people are behind you. It really helps." said Barbara Harris, breast cancer survivor.

Organizers say the run raised $17,000 this year.
