Five boaters happy to be alive after things went horribly wrong on the Ogeechee River

BLOOMINGDALE, GA (WTOC) -

Five boaters are probably thanking their lucky stars after a day on the water went horribly wrong.

The group was traveling down the Ogeechee River in the Bloomingdale area near Shad Road when they hit something in the water near the woodline, which caused the motor to fall off and the boat to flip. Everyone fell in the cold waters and eventually all of them were able to get to land, but they couldn't get out of the woods where they were.

"Several of the volunteers that had boats were able to get some boats in the water and by listening and shouting back and forth we were able to locate them in the wood line in various places. One of the people was actually on top of the boat and stayed with the craft," said Battalion Chief Brett Waters.

The boat remains in the Ogeechee near the wood line. Emergency crews are working on a plan to get the sunken boat out of the river as soon as they can. Three people were taken to Memorial Health to be treated for hyperthermia.
