SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

A Savannah College of Art and Design graduate student was honored with the Manufacturing Jewelers and Suppliers of America 2013 Future of the Industry Award.

Jiarui Lu, M.A. jewelry and objects student, earned recognition and a scholarship for her innovation in jewelry design and manufacturing. This award celebrates talented individuals who will lead the jewelry industry toward innovative new trends.

Lu's winning brooch design utilizes a traditional Chinese technique known as the kingfisher feather inlay, an ornate ivory carving style made popular during the royal Qing Dynasty, 1644-1911.

Lu's work, "Auspicious Cloud" will be featured in full-page ads such as Metalsmith and Instore magazines. Lu's piece also won her a $1,500 scholarship and publicity at the 2013 Expo New York by MJSA.

MJSA is a trade association dedicated to professional excellence in jewelry design and manufacturing. The annual Vision Awards, including the Future of the Industry category for which Lu was recognized, emphasize outstanding talent and creativity in jewelry design. Entry in this category is open to any student enrolled in an art, design or jewelry-related program at a college or university.

This is the second consecutive year a SCAD student has been named one of the two award winners.
