Investigators looking for a cause in a mobile home fire in Effingham County.

A fire erupted at a home Monday morning on Tara Street in Rincon. A 51-year-old man was the only one home at the time of the fire. He was apparently in his workshop in the back of the house and smelled smoke, according to the American Red Cross.

He then discovered his house was on fire and immediately called 911. Fire departments from Rincon and Springfield responded and extinguished the blaze.

Right now, it's not clear how the fire started, but officials say it started in the living area of the home.

No one appeared to be injured, but the fire destroyed the home.

Neighbors said they could see flames coming from the roof almost immediately.

"I got here and the whole living room was in flames and they were in there putting it out. But thank God the guy wasn't asleep because he works nights - so I've heard and sleeps during the day," said neighbor Frances Grant.

The American Red Cross Disaster Action Team Captain in Effingham County responded at about 9:30 a.m. The Red Cross Disaster Action Team Captain provided assistance in the form of funds for food and clothing due to fire damage to the vinyl clad home.

The man told Red Cross volunteers he does have insurance. The man, his 50-year-old wife and 18-year-old son will stay with family members until the agent makes other provisions.
