SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

Crews with the city of Savannah responded to a minor sewage spill at 500 East River Street on Monday. According to officials, the spill was the result of sewage discharge caused by a force main failure on River Street LS #21. The total volume discharged was 12 gallons, which is considered a minor spill under State Environmental Protection Division guidelines.

Crews were notified of the spill at 12:06 p.m. and the spill was cleaned up by 12:30 p.m. Sewer Conveyance staff contained the sewage flow to the storm-water catch basin and vacuumed the flow seeping through the pavement. They also cut the asphalt and sidewalk out to repair the crack in the force main. Crews will spread lime over the affected area.

In the near future, officials will begin planning to replace the force main.
