County getting jail cost re-count

Posted: Updated:
CHATHAM CO., GA (WTOC) -

The Chatham County Commission is getting a "second opinion" on cost estimates to run the county's renovated and expanded jail.

Construction is coming in under budget, but operating costs have taken some commission members by surprise -- $58.8 million for the first year alone.

The Georgia Sheriff's Association gave St Lawrence those cost estimates. Now, commissioners are turning to the University of Georgia for their own cost study.

"We want to make sure we get the staffing right," Commission Chairman Al Scott said. "But we also have to be concerned about the cost. I'm concerned about it. And I want to do everything possible to avoid having to increase."

Results of that study are expected within the next two weeks. The County Commission must approve its annual budget by June 30.
