SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

The Martin Luther King Jr. Observance Day Association handed out scholarships in Dr. King's memory Thursday. There were seven high school winners this year. Students had to submit an essay to be considered.

"Of course we know how important education was to Dr. King and his thoughts and his desires for our young people so we thought what better way to memorialize him and remember him on this day," said Carolyn S. Blackshear, Martin Luther King Jr. Observance Day Association.

The group donated about $7,500 in scholarship money.
