CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) -

Police spent early Friday morning searching for the people who were inside of a car that was hit by a train.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police were called out to Old Concord Road in northeast Charlotte at about 3 a.m. Someone reported a train collided with a Cadillac.

Police say they found the car, tossed around like a tin can. It was upside down in a ditch.

But there was no one from the car at the scene.

The intersection was closed off for three hours while the car was cleared by wrecker crews, and railroad workers checked the area to make sure none of the tracks were damaged.

Once investigators and railroad workers gave the OK, the freight train continued on its way and traffic soon returned to normal.

Officers said there have been no reports of the car being stolen. They are working to locate the car owner to try and figure out what happened.
