BEAUFORT CO., SC (WTOC) -

The Beaufort County Sheriff's office has received a grant for $120,000 from the Department of Homeland Security to purchase a new bomb squad robot.

Capt. Scott Johnson said it all comes down to size. Though the current F6A Remote Tech Robot works, there are just some things it cannot do, and some tight places where it cannot fit. The new T5 Robot is much smaller.

"It's easier for us to handle. It can go down aisles of buses, trains, and things like that the larger robot can't. It's another tool in our tool box to utilize. It's much more agile than the larger robot and it will help us accomplish our mission," said Johnson.

The T5 weighs 140 pounds, and it's 24 inches shorter than the old robot.

The sheriff's office isn't getting rid of the F6A, which has its own advantages. Johnson said they'll us both of them.

"These robots are just like tools, and we utilize them that way and they do cut down on hazards for officers," he said. "Officer safety is key."

The new robot is expected to get to the sheriff's office sometime in the next few weeks.
