A cabdriver is recovering from a shooting after an armed robbery turned violent early today. Just before 4am this morning, Savannah-Chatham police were notified of a shooting on Sylvania Road in the Ogeechee Farms area of Chatham County. When officers arrived, they found a yellow cab that had run off the road and the driver wounded from what appears to be a gunshot.

The victim was able to tell police he picked up a man who asked to be taken to Sylvania Road. But the man pulled a gun and demanded the taxi driver's money as they neared the road. A scuffle broke out and during that time the gun was fired, wounding the driver.

Neighbors tell police they heard that shot.

The victim was taken to Memorial Health for treatment. Police have identified him as 27-year-old Jamel Smith.

Police found a trail of money and describe the suspect as "an adult white male, believed to be 30-35 years of age, standing approximately 6 ft. tall, with brown hair and big ears." Anyone with information is urged to call CrimeStoppers at 232-2020; a reward of up to $2,500 is being offered.
