WTOC gets inside a 'ship fire'

JACKSONVILLE, FLA (WTOC) -

They described it as "fighting a fire in an oven" or "fighting a fire in an upside-down skyscraper."

Firefighters from across the Coastal Empire traveled to Jacksonville this weekend, to the Fire Academy of the South, for ship firefighting training.

"With the expansion of the Port of Savannah, our business and commerce will be increasing," Garden City and Thunderbolt Fire's Mike Godbold said. "The larger the ships the more the hazards."

The training is funded through a federal port security grant, and local firefighters authored the curriculum. They've trained 140 firefighters so far.

Firefighters from Savannah, Garden City, Thunderbolt, Tybee Island, Glynn County and Jacksonville trained Saturday in a simulated ship, a corrugated metal building on the fire academy's campus.

"It's the best we can do on land to replicate the marine environment," Fire Academy of the South Executive Director Sheldon Reed said.
