HILTON HEAD ISLAND, SC (WTOC) -

A group on Hilton Head Island says "thanks" to its donors.

On Sunday Deep Well Project workers invited the community out for food, fun and entertainment to celebrate 40 years. Deep Well helps people living on Hilton Head Island with rent payments, utilities, repairs, food and other necessities. The money is raised in the community and is solely for the benefit of  people on the island.

"Our mission had definitely changed since we started. We started digging out deep wells and fortunately we don't have to do that anymore but as other needs of islanders became known deep well stepped up to the plate and helped them with whatever the immediate emergency was," said Director of Deep Well Project Betsy Doughtie.

Deep Well Project has also been named an "Angel Charity" by the South Carolina Secretary of State.

The award is given to charities that use at least 80 percent of their proceeds for the designated charity. They also got to enjoy  some good ol' barbershop singing
