SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

The Savannah Ronald McDonald House is closing Friday due to mold while a team works to fix the problem.

The Board of Directors for Ronald McDonald House Charities of the Coastal Empire announced the closure Tuesday morning.

The scope of work will be extensive and preventative measures are being taken to ensure the mold doesn't return. The process could take up to six weeks.

"After a series of rigorous inspections, preliminary tests results indicate that there is evidence of mold in several areas at our Ronald McDonald House," said Executive Director Nikole Layton, in a statement. "In the interest of the health and safety of our guest families, volunteers and staff, we have made the decision to close the House temporarily while we correct the issue. We appreciate the public's concern and continued support during this time."

An anonymous donor is providing the families who were residing in the Ronald McDonald House with hotel accommodations and helping pay for meals. Families can use Ronald McDonald Family Room programs at Candler Hospital and the Children's Hospital at Memorial University Medical Center for laundry facilities and other amenities.
