Fire in school's attic prompts evacuation

A fire at Coastal Middle School is forcing students out of the building. A fire at Coastal Middle School is forcing students out of the building.
SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

Students will be dismissed Tuesday afternoon from Marshpoint Elementary School.  

This comes after a fire at Coastal Middle School forced students out of the building. The Coastal Middle School is located 4595 US 80 on Whitemarsh Island. 

"It was like a drill but more intense," said Sara Surrett, Coastal Middle School 7th grader.

Coastal Middle students who ride the bus will be dismissed at 2:30 p.m. from the front of Marshpoint Elementary. Coastal Middle students who get picked up by car will be dismissed at 2:45 p.m. from the side of the school near teacher's parking lot.  

Tuesday afternoon's Coastal Middle soccer and baseball practice are canceled.

According to the Savannah-Chatham County Public School System, Coastal Middle students who ride the bus will be dismissed at 2:30 p.m. from the front of Marshpoint Elementary.

Coastal Middle students who get picked up by car will be dismissed at 2:45 p.m. from the side of the school near teacher's parking lot.

Tuesday afternoon's Coastal Middle soccer and baseball practice are canceled.

The SCCPSS issued this statement: 

COASTAL MIDDLE: A fire was discovered in the attic of the school this morning and Southside Fire Department has responded.  The building has been evacuated and students have been moved to Marshpoint and Islands High School. 

All students are accounted for and safe.

Parents are discouraged from picking up students at this time, as further updates will be provided regarding the operational schedule for the remainder of the school day and school dismissal.
