3rd ID soldiers killed in Afghanistan

FORT STEWART (WTOC) -

Three soldiers assigned to the 5th Squadron, 7th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Armor Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division at Fort Stewart were killed April 6. 

They were killed in Kandahar, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when enemy forces attacked their unit in Zabul, Afghanistan with a vehicle-borne improvised explosive device, according to the U.S. Department of Defense. 

Staff Sgt. Christopher M. Ward, 24, of Oak Ridge, TN; Spc. Wilbel A. Robles-Santa, 25, of Juncos, Puerto Rico; and Spc. Delfin M. Santos Jr., 24, of San Jose, CA; were killed. 

Ward was on his third deployment, according to the Fort Stewart Public Affairs Office. He joined the army in November 2005 and arrived at the unit in October 2006. Robles-Santa was cavalry scout on his second deployment. He joined the army in October 2010. He arrived at the unit in February 2011. Santos Jr. was a cavalry scout on his second deployment. He joined the Army in February 2007 and arrived at the unit in May 2011.

    After years of an almost complete moratorium, the South Atlantic Fishery Management Council voted 12 to 1 Monday to open a limited 2017 red snapper fishing season in the South Atlantic. If approved by NOAA Fisheries, the season will likely begin in mid-to late October.
