Lowcountry police officers train in active shooting situations

On Tuesday, police officers in Bluffton are learned how to take down an active shooter in schools.

Officers said they don't expect a mass shooting to happen here, but after what happened in Connecticut and Colorado, they feel it's important to be prepared for the worst.

More than 30 officers rushed into the Bluffton Middle School as if there was a real shooter in there. They were practicing Advance Law Enforcement Rapid Response Training. The course is supposed to prepare each officer to isolate, distract, and neutralize an active shooter. This training started in Texas, and now most departments across the United States use it.

Officers said the training gives them the knowledge they need to be able to react to a mass shooting situation quickly and appropriately without having to wait for a SWAT team.
