SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

Police are investigating a shooting involving a Savannah-Chatham Metro police officer overnight.

It happened around 3 a.m. Wednesday at Barnard Street and Victory Drive in Midtown Savannah.

Officials have not released many details, but they said the officer opened fire first. One victim was transported to the hospital with unknown injuries.

"Early this morning, I heard about seven gunshots go off. I knew for fact that when I heard the police, I knew it was something terrible. I didn't want to move from where I was because I was worried about my safety," said Gregory Ellis who lives nearby.

Areas around where the shooting occurred were blocked off to drivers for hours.

"This close makes it scary for us. When you see stuff like this on television you think, "over there," "or over here," not right in my backyard," said Thomas Miller who lives a few blocks away from the shooting.

Forensic investigators spent most of the morning taking photos and gathering evidence.
