Car seat inspections held in Vidalia

VIDALIA, GA (WTOC) -

Safe Kids and the Governor's Office of Highway Safety making sure children are secure in car seats.

On Wednesday, they conducted car seat inspections to see if they were properly installed. The checks were conducted at the WalMart in Vidalia.

Safety technicians said that nearly 90 percent of car seats are installed wrong. They said drivers need both the car seat manual and the vehicle manual.

Having a car seat improperly installed could mean severe consequences for the child.

"In the event of a crash, a child can get injured if the car seat is not installed properly. They are more likely to get ejected - the whole seat and the child could be ejected cause it's too loose - causing more injuries to the child. If it properly installed, they have more than a 90 percent chance of surviving the crash," said Bonnie Brantley, of Safe Kids, Toombs County.

Safe Kids holds classes twice a month about car seat installations. Parents can make an appointment at any fitting station to get the car seats  inspected.
