SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

Savannah-Chatham Metro Police are investigating what led up to the shooting of a 23-year-old man by a police officer Wednesday morning.

Timothy Maurice Williams was shot at about 3 a.m. at West 44th and Barnard streets.

Central Precinct Patrol Officers responded to a report of several gunshots. Three males were seen running on West 44th Street and climbing a fence into a yard of a house, according to police. At the same time, someone who lives in the house called 911 and flagged down a responding officer to report someone was breaking into her house.

The officer found the men her yard and ordered them to stop. Two of the men climbed over a fence trying to get away. The third man, Williams, began charging at the officer, prompting him to fire, according to police.

Williams suffered non-life-threatening injuries. He was taken to Memorial University Medical Center.

The two other men were questioned. SCMPD continues to investigate the original gunshots, the pursuit through the fenced yard and the shooting.
