DARIEN, GA (WTOC) -

A Darien insurance agent has been arrested on charges of felony insurance fraud.

The owner of Sapelo Insurance Agency and Avera Insurance Agency, Dennis Avera Jr., 58, has been charged with several counts of felony insurance fraud. The office is located in Darien and he also has an office in Ludowici.

The arrest comes after the State Board of Workers' Compensation's Enforcement Division and the Insurance Commissioner's Office received several complaints that Avera had taken premium dollars for workers' compensation insurance policies that were never purchased, according to the State Board of Workers' Compensation.

Avera took money from several clients when they thought they were buying workers' compensation coverage and general liability insurance, according to the State Board of Workers' Compensation. But they were given a bogus certificate of insurance as proof of the coverage.

Business owners in the areas of Darien, McIntosh County, Brunswick and Glynn County who have bought workers' compensation or general liability insurance from Avera or through the Sapelo Insurance Agency, are asked to contact the State Board of Workers' Compensation's Enforcement Division at 404.657.7285 or 800.533.0682 to verify the insurance is legitimate.
