Wreck closes Blue Jay Road in Effingham Co.

EFFINGHAM CO., GA (WTOC) -

An accident involving a tractor-trailer and a pickup truck has closed Blue Jay Road between Horsepen Road and Midland Road in Effingham County.

Investigators say the tractor-trailer was traveling eastbound on Blue Jay Road and failed to stop at the stop sign at the intersection of Midland Road and Blue Jay Road. The tractor-trailer slammed into a Chevy Avalanche, causing both vehicles to flip. Both drivers were transported to the hospital but are expected to be OK.

Residents say they are thankful that no one was killed in the accident but something needs to be done on the road before more lives are impacted.

"I heard there was another wreck at Blue Jay and Midland. A tractor-trailer ran the stop sign again. We definitely need to do something. We did not have a fatality this time. The lady ended up in the ditch through the grace of God," said Woody Brewster, resident.

"We did reduce speed to 35 mph on Midland. We think this helped things out but obviously it is still a problem intersection. There is a caution light out here. We don't know if we need more rumble strips, another caution light a hundred yards before the intersection or a stop light. We asked the DOT to look into it and we will follow up on the issue as well," said David Ehsanipoor, Effingham County Sheriff's Office.

According to the Effingham County Sheriff's Office, the road will remain closed until at least midnight. They're asking everyone to avoid the area.

Crews are cleaning up debris and diesel fuel that leaked on the road.
