SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

Retired Savannah-Chatham major charged with computer child exploitation was freed Thursday on a $10,000 bond.

Douglas Burkhalter, 70, was required as a condition of his bond to turn over all of his weapons to Savannah-Chatham police for safe keeping.

A married father of two who retired in 2007 after 39 years with the Chatham County and merged Savannah-Chatham police department, Burkhalter was arrested Wednesday, part of a state-wide child pornography sting by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.

"I'm sure many people were surprised," Chatham County District Attorney Meg Heap said. "It's very sad. But if a crime has been committed, that's our job to prosecute these cases."

If convicted, Burkhalter would face 5-20 years in prison. His was one of 98 warrants issued by the GBI's Crimes Against Children Task Force after a three-month investigation.
