SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

There are more options in Savannah for those who run the risk of breast cancer than anywhere else in the state even the entire country.

Doctors at Memorial Health are using a cutting-edge tool called cancer intra-operative radiotherapy. The therapy session lasts for one hour. Radiation sessions can last for weeks.

The new tool allows for more options before and after surgery and less time-consuming, according to Memorial Health.

"Some women make the choice to have the mastectomy because they don't want to or they don't have the means to come back and forth – 100 miles each day for their treatment," said Dr. Aaron Pederson, of Memorial Health. "That's a major improvement, that we can say to these women: 'You don't have to have your breast removed just because you don't have a ride back and forth.'"
