ECSO: Two arrested in ATV theft attempt

EFFINGHAM CO., GA (WTOC) -

Two people have been arrested after attempting to steal an ATV from a residence on Ebenzer Road.

Early Tuesday morning, deputies responded to the 2000 block of Ebenzer Road where they found a truck stuck in a ditch along with an ATV.

James Owens, 24, and Nicole Wagner, 27, both of Rincon, told deputies they saw someone trying to steal an ATV and notified the homeowners.

Deputies determined that Owens and Wagner were on the property and took the ATV, according to the Effingham County Sheriff's Office.

While in the process of stealing it, Owens' truck got stuck in a ditch. Wagner and Owens were arrested near the scene early Tuesday morning.

Owens resisted deputies during the arrest, but was then placed in the back of a sheriff's patrol car. Owens then kicked the back windows out of the car and continued to be combative, according to the ECSO.

Owens, has an extensive criminal history, and was charged with theft by taking, obstruction of a law enforcement officer, unlawful use of a communication device, conspiracy and interference with government property.

Wagner, also has an extensive criminal history and is a convicted felon, was charged with theft by taking, conspiracy, and unlawful use of a communication device.

Both remain in the Effingham County Jail.
