Illegal signs may be legitimized in downtown Savannah

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

Some downtown Savannah business owners have been breaking the law -- without knowing it.

Sandwich boards, chalk signs advertising daily specials outside a business, are illegal in the Historic District, despite the fact that dozens dot the city's sidewalks.

City staff is drafting an ordinance that would make some of the signs legal, getting input from downtown businesses and residents on the proposed changes.

"We're looking at modifying the ordinance to allow for certain things but making sure it's in keeping with the aesthetic of downtown," Savannah Citizens' Office Director Susan Broker said.

But not everyone likes the idea. Community advocate Ardis Wood spoke against the measure in the council's workshop. In an interview afterward, WTOC asked her why she doesn't like the signs.

"... Because they're ugly, because they make a place look trashy, because they're not effective., because they're dangerous," she said.

The Council is expected to vote on the issue within the next couple months.
