Onion ring booth welcomes Vidalia festival crowd

The midday line in the First Baptist Church parking lot was a sure sign the taste was worth the wait. Members of the Downtown Vidalia Association sliced, battered, and fried onion rings as fast as they could to keep up with the demand.

Another tent serves up brochures, t-shirts, and everything related to the Vidalia Onion Festival. The location has become a welcome wagon for visitors. DVA executive director Paula Toole said they see an average 2,000 people each year during the weekend.

"We let them know what they need, where different events will be held and when and how to get there and get them some onion rings," she said.

In addition, local farmers find their favorite spot along U.S. Highway 280 to park a truck loaded with tons of onion bags for sale.

Friday night's fun starts off with the opening ceremony, street dance.
