Stax student & Beale Street great to battle on 'The Voice' tonight

(WMC-TV) - Kris Thomas and Patrick Dodd are two of four Memphians who have made it so far on "The Voice".  Both are expected to battle it out Monday evening in hopes of moving forward in the competition.

It may be Kris' first time working with his judge, Shakira, this is not his first time working with a big singing star.

Kris Thomas is a product of Stax Academy.

Just one year ago, he was at the academy shooting a music video with country singer Pam Tillis. It was a duet that featured the backup vocals of Stax Academy students.

Since then, Justin Merrick, the vocal director at the academy, has been a big fan of Kris Thomas.

"This is an after school program. They have aspirations of being the next Kris Thomas and they want to be a star and that's what the academy is geared towards," said Merrick. "Grooming talent for the next generation of soul communicators."

Kris Thomas is not allowed to speak to media about being on the show yet, but he did say he will be featured on Monday night's episode of "The Voice".

"The Voice" also tweeted out a sneak peek to a performance that will air tonight... and the video they linked to was a YouTube clip of Patrick Dodd.

It would appear that two of our local contestants will battle it out TONIGHT on Action News 5 at 7 p.m.
