The quietest day in professional golf woke up with a few words.
It was a sweet Savannah welcome for Jack Nicklaus. Many fans turned out Monday morning at the Club at Savannah Harbor.
The legendary golfer made his first appearance at the Liberty Mutual Insurance Legends of Golf and he made Monday perhaps the most thrilling day of the week for local golf fans.
"I've been down here a few times for the regular tournament, but this is the first time I've been here for the older fellas. Having Jack here really makes a lot of difference," said Rich Barr, of Statesboro.
"I've kept up with him pretty much my entire life. It has been a pleasure to have him here," said Pat Edwards, of Hinesville.
It was an opportunity as rare as the atmosphere - a chance to see arguably the greatest golfer of all time - up close - in Savannah - hitting shots that counted in competition.
"I've seen him play in tournaments a few times before and he's still a great player," said Ron Rubacker, of Hilton Head Island.
An opportunity to watch Nicklaus play a tournament round was even reason for someone who works in golf - who will be playing in the legends later in the week - to come out to the course early - and share the day's rare thrill.
"It's been great. It's been chilly and cold and windy, but it's great watching him," said Steve Burkett, of Statesboro.
