The city of Savannah kicked off their lean challenge Tuesday with a pep rally and group walk led by Mayor Edna Jackson.
The eight-week fitness competition made up of teams is designed to help city employees and their families embrace healthy eating habits and to encourage physical activity.
Nearly 240 people signed up for the challenge. The city of Savannah teamed up with the YMCA of Coastal Georgia and Healthy Savannah.
"The reason is simply to help their employees get healthier to help cut down on their insurance costs and just to get people live active lives. We are just excited to be in support of the city initiative," said Joel Smoker, vice president of operations at YMCA Coastal Georgia.
Collectively, participants have pledged to lose nearly 900 pounds during the two-month challenge. The teams with the most weight loss will receive prizes for their accomplishments.
