HINESVILLE, GA (WTOC) -

Nearly 100 soldiers and civilians picked up honors at the 14th annual Medical Department Activity Volunteer Awards at Fort Stewart.

More than 600 people volunteered a combined 20,000 hours of community services in 2012 through MEDDAC. That includes time spent helping at Winn Army Community Hospital and beyond.

"They enhance what we do here by giving a smile, helping someone find their way around the hospital, or just being here," explained Volunteer Services Director Brigitte Cabeza-Shanken.

She said those volunteer hours saved the Department of the Army an estimated $475,589.

Off post projects included volunteering at the VA in Dublin, at Coastal Manor Nursing Home in Ludowici, Hinesville's Project Homeless among others.
