An active soldier at Hunter Army Airfield turned himself into military police Tuesday in connection with the fatal shooting of a Savannah tire store owner.

Emanuel Perez, 31, has been charged in the shooting death of 30-year-old Armando Montes.

Montes was the owner of Brothers Tire Repair at Hampstead Avenue and White Bluff Road. Police said he was shot multiple times outside of his business just after noon Tuesday.

Police said the men got into a dispute before the shots were fired. Montes leaves behind a wife and two children ages 2 and 3. He owned the business with his brother. Friends and family members said Montes was a caring man and they just want to know why his life was taken away.

"He was a wonderful person. He had a great heart," said family friend Joy Sammons. "He would help anyone in need. If anybody needed tires and they didn't have tires he would tell them not to worry about it. It is a really sick situation that he was killed violently for whatever reason."

Perez turned himself in to military police shortly after the shooting. He is being held at the Chatham County jail.
