Gene Sauers' first Legends week continues improve even before he has even hit a shot that counts in competition.
The Savannah native has been added to the Legends Division field, one day after he was invited to play in the Champions Tour event's Rafael Division.
Russ Cochran missed his pro-am time this morning by 10 minutes, leading to an automatic disqualification from the tournament under Champions Tour rules. As the first alternate, Sauers was asked to partner with Kenny Perry and will now compete in the 54-hole Legends Division Friday through Sunday at The Club at Savannah Harbor.
The step up in competition is important to Sauers in several ways. Not only will he be eligible to compete at the highest level and for the largest purse available at the Legends, whatever he earns this week will now count toward his season-long total, through which he can maintain his eligibility on the Champions Tour.
Sauers was set to play in the Rafael Division with Ian Baker-Finch, but that would not have been official money list earnings.
