SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

First Tee of Savannah just announced that it is expanding its reach to local schools and students.

The program had been operating in six Savannah-Chatham Public Schools. On Wednesday, it was announced that it is going into 34 more local schools and will provide access to golf to nearly 22,000 local school kids.

Students from Bartow Elementary were at the Club at Savannah Harbor demonstrating some of the equipment that will be used in physical education classes. The opportunity gave some students their first experience with golf - and set them up to eventually enter the First Tee program, which operates at six sites throughout the area.

The program also introduces them to the nine core values, which are life skills the game of golf teaches. The program's expansion is possible through a grant from the Southern Co.
