84-year-old driver charged with DWI in afternoon crash

PENDER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – An 84-year-old man is facing DWI charges after crashing into a motorcycle Wednesday afternoon.

According to the Surf City Police Department, Robert Jackson Knight, 84 of Topsail, was driving a van on Highway 17 around 4:00 p.m.

They say Knight turned on 210 East, crossed the median, and hit Jatha Sheppard Jr, who was riding a motorcycle that was stopped at the light.

According to police, the van dragged Sheppard more than 100 feet before rear-ending another vehicle and pinning the motorcyclist between the two cars.

Sheppard was taken to the hospital with serious injuries and is expected to undergo surgery.

He is currently in fair condition, according to hospital officials.

Knight was charged with DWI, having an open container, and felony serious injury with motor vehicle.

The investigation is ongoing.
