Survey shows prom spending on the rise

POOLER, GA (WTOC) -

For many high schoolers it's considered a rite of passage, but from dresses to limos, the costs associated with prom night can add up quickly.

A recent survey conducted by Visa shows, on average, families plan to spend a whopping $1,139 for their child's special night. The survey shows prom spending continues to soar, outpacing inflation and growing for the second straight year in a row. This accounts for spending on everything from dresses to tuxedos, limos, jewelry and shoes.

Families in the Northeast tend to spend the most on prom, averaging about $1,500. Families in the Midwest, on the other hand, spend the least, a little more than $700 on average.

WTOC spoke with the manager of Genealogy Boutique in Pooler, which opened during the height of the recession. Paige Daring said she can definitely see the turnaround.

"This year more so than ever, I feel like the economy's coming back a little bit and people are spending more money."

The survey also showed parents plan on paying for a little bit more than half of the prom costs, while the teenagers usually pay the rest.
