Two Chatham County sheriff's officers have been indicted for having sexual relations with inmates they were supposed to protect.

After receiving complaints from inmates, the Chatham County Sheriff's Office began a criminal investigations into the two officers, which led to charges of sexual misconduct. One officer is already behind bars and the other is expected to turn himself in.

Chatham County sheriff's deputy Cpl. Shelton Crowder was indicted on charges of sexual assault against a person in custody. Officials say the event took place on Aug. 12, 2012. Crowder was let go from the sheriff's office after 17 years.

Chatham County Corrections Officer Lewis Lane turned himself into the Chatham County Sheriff's Office Wednesday night after being charged with sexual assault on an inmate. He is currently being held in jail and has been fired.

Officials say this type of activity will not be tolerated.

"We have an obligation to protect these inmates," said Chief Deputy Roy Harris. "We can not allow staff members to prey on them, whether it be to get them extra commissary, or special privileges like books, cigarettes, whatever contraband that this inmate may want. Even for consensual sex, it is wrong."

The Chatham County Sheriff's Office follows the Federal Prison Rape Elimination Act. They have a hotline for inmates and former inmates to report such acts.
